“Learn To Sail” Basic Keelboat (ASA 101)
Prerequisites: NJ Safe Boating Certificate (click for details)
This course makes sailing easy and gets you out there sailing on your own in just 2 days of instruction. You will learn from ASA award winning instructors at the American Sailing Association’s Outstanding School of the Year. You will be sailing on the 23ft Pearson Ensign that is in the Sailing Hall of Fame. The Ensign’s 9ft open cockpit and heavy full keel make the boat comfortable, stable and fun to learn on. Each day you will gain the skills and knowledge to confidently sail in familiar waters during average weather. You will be sent a welcome letter and text book, with a detailed explanation of how to prepare for the course. The first day will begin dockside with knot tying and safety instruction. The class will then go out sailing from our dock which is exclusively used by the sailing center. Within minutes of leaving you will set sail for approximately 2-3 hours of on-the water training and return to the dock for a 1 hour lunch break. We recommend that you bring a lunch and enjoy eating on our 2000 sq ft covered porch over looking the water, or there are local delis if you prefer. The afternoon session will continue on the water for 4 hours of training. Docking practice will be conducted every time you go out and come in. The second day continues with approximately 3 hours of sailing, a 1 hour lunch break, and then back out for another 3 hours of on-the-water training followed by the optional written exam.
