Bareboat Chartering and Cruising Catamaran (ASA 104/114)

Prerequisites: ASA 101 & 103, NJ Safe Boating Certificate (click for details)

This unique combination course on the 30′ Gemini catamaran is your next step towards that dream cruise in the Caribbean aboard a bareboat catamaran. This live aboard two and one half day course is intended for people with quite a bit of sailing experience and with ASA 101 & 103 courses under their belts. You will learn from ASA award winning instructors at the American Sailing Association’s Outstanding School of the Year. This course combines the ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering Standard (click here for details http://www.asa.com/asa_standards/standard_bareboat_chartering.html) and the ASA 114 Cruising Catamaran Standard (click here for details http://www.asa.com/asa_standards/standard_cruising_catamaran.html).  The course covers all aspects of sailing a larger cruising catamaran in the 30 to 50 foot range, including boat handling under power and sail in coastal waters by day. Emphasis is placed on the
differences from monohull sailing and includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.  You will be sent a welcome letter and 2 text books, with a detailed explanation of how to prepare for the course. Class typically starts Friday afternoon and ends Sunday afternoon with arrival and departure times between 4-6pm based on participating student’s schedules. You will spend the first afternoon practicing docking and mooring techniques and some classroom work throughout the evening typically at our marina. You will get under way the next morning around 9am to begin your voyage to a marina in Forked River for an overnight stay in a visitor slip. Typically dinner is shared ashore (at the student’s expense) while test preparation for the written exams continues throughout the evening. Another option is to anchor overnight at a destination down bay such as Tices Shoals. The float plan will be discussed as a group based on weather and other considerations. The written exams for ASA certifications are typically given during the course before your final sail back to our marina. On-the-water training then continues throughout the afternoon. As part of the course, you will assist in menu planning and provisioning the boat for the trip. Provisioning and docking fees are not included and will be shared by students through coordination of your instructor (@ $45/student).
