Mini Quiz on Safe
Boating
You are heading into a harbor and you come to a horizontally banded buoy with a red stripe on top and a green one below it. Which way do you go? Ans. Keep the buoy on your right and go straight ahead for the main channel, turn right and keep the buoy on your left for the secondary channel. You pull up to the gas dock in your outboard powered boat and you prepare to gas up. True or False: you open all windows and hatches to make sure you have good ventilation, then make sure the gas nozzle does not touch the metal rim of the gas filler, to prevent sparks? Ans. FALSE. Keep the boat closed up while gassing, then open everything when you are finished; and the gas nozzle must be kept in contact with the metal rim to safely discharge static electricity while fueling. Get these wrong in the test that really counts (on the water) and you will ruin your whole day. Running aground can bring on costly repairs, big towing charges, and it can be dangerous if you are going fast. And, needless to say, fire and explosion are some of the big risks to know about in boating.
